Pass Tax Overhaul That Protects Corporate Profits, Gillibrand Calls On Congress To Close Tax Loopholes That Force Taxpayers To Subsidize Massive CEO Compensation

Source: Senator  Kirsten E.Gillibrand - (D - NY)

New York, NY - October 24, 2017 - (The Ponder News) -- U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand stood with community advocates and workers and called on Congress to reject the GOP’s tax overhaul that protects corporate profits and the wealthiest Americans, and urged her colleagues to pass her legislation to close tax loopholes that force taxpayers to subsidize massive CEO compensation. Gillibrand’s legislation, the Stop CEO Excessive Pay Act would put taxpayers first by closing the tax loophole that allows companies to deduct part of the amount they spend on executive compensation. Gillibrand’s bill would give shareholders more oversight in determining whether CEOs should receive substantial raises or bonuses. Under the current system, companies can get a tax deduction for excessive CEO pay and pay CEOs massive amounts of money with little input from shareholders.

“We need to simplify our tax system, but we need to do it in a way that rewards work and not just profitable corporations and their CEOs,” said Senator Gillibrand. “A good place to start is by closing loopholes that let corporations deduct excessive CEO pay from their taxes as a business expense. Even while the middle class has been shrinking and workers’ wages have hardly budged, corporations have been paying their CEOs higher and higher salaries – in some cases more than 300 times higher than regular employees. This is unacceptable, and it would not be fixed by the tax plan Republicans are moving to pass, which I urge all of my colleagues to reject. We need to start rewarding work again in this country, and ending taxpayer subsidies of CEO pay is a good start.”

“Corporate greed in this country has led to unacceptable levels of income inequality. Corporations should not be allowed to take advantage of tax laws that force working men and women to subsidize exorbitant CEO pay. It’s outrageous that the same hardworking employees, responsible for making their employers profitable in the first place, struggle to get by, while CEOs receive 347 times what they earn on average. I want to thank Senator Kirsten Gillibrand for spearheading this legislation, which is a positive step toward addressing these inequalities and making profitable companies pay their fair share,” said Mario Cilento, President of the New York State AFL-CIO.

COCHRAN VOTES FOR FY2018 BUDGET RESOLUTION

Source: Senator Thad Cochran - (R - MS)

Washington, D.C. - October 23, 2017 - (The Ponder News) -- U.S. Senator Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) on Thursday night voted with the Senate to approve the FY2018 Budget Resolution, which includes a mechanism for the Congress to consider the first major tax reform in decades.

“The passage of a budget resolution moves the FY2018 budget and appropriations process forward.  I’m pleased this budget blueprint gives Congress an opportunity to pass comprehensive tax reform.  Tax cuts will strengthen our economy by allowing working Americans to keep more of their money, and by easing hardships that the tax code puts on businesses,” Cochran said.

Cochran, chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, continued to push for an overall budget agreement between the Trump administration and Congress in order to facilitate the completion of the FY2018 appropriations process.  The Committee has approved all but four of the annual appropriations bills to date.

“To complete this work, a new budget agreement will be necessary so we can responsibly fund our national defense and other priorities.  I will continue to work toward that end with my colleagues and with the administration,” Cochran said.

The FY2018 budget resolution passed on a 51-49 vote.

CAPITO VOTES TO PASS BUDGET RESOLUTION, MOVE TO PRO-GROWTH TAX REFORM

Source: Senator Shelley Moore Capito - (R-WV)

Washington, D.C. - October 23, 2017 - (The Ponder News) -- “Tonight, the Senate passed a reasonable budget resolution, an essential step towards comprehensive tax reform that will grow our nation’s economy, create jobs and put more money in the pockets of middle-class families. Failure to pass this budget resolution would have doomed our efforts to work with President Trump to deliver tax reform for the American people.

“A vote against the resolution is a vote to stop pro-growth tax reform in its tracks, and continue the economic stagnation that became the new normal during the Obama administration. I am also glad the Senate voted to adopt my amendment to make sure hard-working middle-class Americans are a top priority as we begin our work on tax reform.

“Once the Senate and House budget resolutions are reconciled, we will have an opportunity to deliver responsible tax reform legislation that will lead to more jobs and higher wages in West Virginia and across the country. There is still much work to be done to make tax reform a reality for American families and small businesses, but I am very happy to support this step forward, rather than cut off the path to economic prosperity.”

Yesterday, Senator Capito spoke on the Senate floor to encourage her colleagues to pass the budget resolution, paving the way for a tax overhaul and creating a path to greater prosperity. For a video of her full remarks, click here.

U.S. SENATOR TAMMY BALDWIN STATEMENT ON SENATE BUDGET RESOLUTION

Source: Senator Tammy Baldwin - (D - WI)

Washington, D.C. - October 20, 2017 - (The Ponder News) -- U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin released the following statement on the Fiscal Year 2018 Budget Resolution voted on in the Senate tonight:

“I believe Wisconsin families need a tax break and that's what I'm working for. But this budget resolution paves the way for a partisan tax proposal that favors big corporations and gives a majority of the tax breaks to the wealthiest 1 percent. I just don’t think it’s right to make Wisconsin’s hardworking middle class families pay for it by blowing a hole in the deficit and cutting Medicare and Medicaid.”

Senator Baldwin offered an amendment to prohibit the Republican tax plan to cut taxes for the top 1% and big corporations from increasing the deficit. She also cosponsored additional amendments to the budget resolution: Senator Heitkamp’s amendment to prohibit taxes from being raised on Americans making less than $250,000 a year, Senator Donnelly’s amendment to prevent companies that have outsourced jobs from benefiting from tax breaks and Senator Nelson’s amendment to reverse the $473 billion in cuts to Medicare in the Republican budget.

Alexander Votes To Take First Step Toward Tax Reform

Source: Senator Lamar Alexander  - (R - TN)

Washington, D.C. - October 20, 2017 - (The Ponder News) --  U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) tonight voted for the fiscal year 2018 budget resolution, which is the first step toward reforming our nation’s tax laws.

“You don’t need to be an accountant to know that our tax code is too complicated, takes too many dollars away from Tennesseans and makes it harder to create good-paying jobs for Tennessee families. The Senate’s passage of a budget resolution provides the tools necessary for tax reform, and I will continue working with President Trump and my colleagues in Congress to create a simpler system that will keep more money in Tennesseans’ pockets and help create and grow jobs for Tennessee families.”

The Senate version of the fiscal year 2018 budget resolution passed by a vote of 51 to 49.

American Action Network Statement on House Budget Resolution

Source: American Action Network

American Action Network (@AAN) Executive Director Corry Bliss released the following statement upon passage of H. Con. Res. 71, the House Republican FY 2018 budget resolution:

“Today, conservatives took a crucial step in the process of delivering tax reform that will lower rates for working families and job creators. House conservatives passed a budget resolution that not only restores fiscal responsibility in Washington but most notably, it paves the way for pro-growth tax reform. This is exactly the kind of leadership that is needed to ensure middle-class families see a simpler, fairer tax code with lower rates. Congress must keep pushing forward, working families across this country deserve relief.”

In August, American Action Network launched the Middle-Class Growth Initiative (MCGI), a special project to advocate for the passage of meaningful tax reform legislation. The multi-pronged campaign, now totaling $10 million, has included advertising on television, radio, direct mail and mobile billboards across over 40 congressional districts nationwide.

Budget Committee Begins Work to Advance Tax Reform

Washington, D.C. - October 4, 2017 (The Ponder News) -- On the Senate floor, U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) discussed the Senate Budget Committee’s mark-up of the Budget Resolution for Fiscal Year 2018 which will lay the foundation for tax reform. Excerpts of Sen. Cornyn’s remarks are below, and video of his remarks can be found here.

“Beginning today, the Senate Budget Committee will take the next step in our effort to enact pro-growth tax reform, this time by marking up a budget resolution. The Committee's work follows the release last week of our unified framework, the tax blueprint on how to create jobs and how to put more money back in the pockets of the hardworking Americans that earn it.”

“The best way to accomplish meaningful tax reform is to lower rates and simplify provisions across the board to give Americans more take-home pay and have to spend less time hiring somebody just to complete their tax return. We can't simply throw up our hands and do nothing and accept the status quo because American workers and job creators can't afford the status quo. I'm optimistic… about the framework and look forward to working with my colleagues in the Finance Committee in the days and weeks ahead.”

Cornyn: Democrats Attacking Tax Reform Ideas They Once Supported

Washington, D.C. - October 4, 2017 (The Ponder News) -- On the Senate floor, U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) noted Democrats’ hypocrisy when discussing tax reform efforts, highlighting their previous support for elements in the Big Six framework which they are now criticizing. Excerpts of Sen. Cornyn’s remarks are below, and video of his remarks can be found here.

“You'd think, given their effusive support for tax reform in the past, our Democratic friends would at least wait to review the legislation before they pounce on it.”

“They are already piling on, and spreading misinformation, and assuming the worst because that's the easy and politically expedient thing to do.”

“What's most striking is that the new framework, unveiled by the so-called ‘Big Six,’ shares many of the core features of previous plans that were widely embraced by Democrats.”

“These changes to our tax code used to be noncontroversial, certainly not partisan. So the Big Six plan isn't just similar to the Wyden one, though. It also shares key features with the so-called ‘Simpson-Bowles’ plan from 2010 that not long ago was embraced by a number of Democrats.”

“Our Democratic colleagues used to think these reforms were long overdue, and they were right then, and they are wrong now.”

“Our colleagues from Ohio, Minnesota, and Missouri have all said in recent years that we should lower the corporate tax rate, not because we love corporations, but because we recognize that that provides incentives for them to stay here and invest in jobs and businesses in America, rather than overseas.”

“There is nothing partisan about wanting an updated and more competitive tax code.”

Tax Reform Statements Continued

Paul Mitchell (R MI, 10th)

“During today’s discussions, we made significant progress toward developing a tax reform plan that will deliver the fairness and simplicity Americans deserve.  As I have said repeatedly throughout this process, we need a tax reform plan that focuses on delivering relief to those who need it most – the middle class.  The framework released today would double the standard deduction so that families and individuals can keep more of their hard-earned dollars, simplify the code into three tax brackets, and eliminate unfair taxes like the ‘Death tax’ that place an undue burden on farmers and family owned businesses,” said Representative Mitchell.

“The American people asked for tax relief; it’s time for both parties and both chambers of Congress to come together to deliver.  I look forward to working with my colleagues in the House and Senate, and with President Trump, to turn today’s framework into legislation that will put American workers and families first.”

Markwayne Mullin (R-OK, 2nd)

“Our nation’s tax code is broken.  For far too long, our tax code has burdened American families, stunted our economy’s growth, and limited the ability of our businesses to compete in global markets,” said Mullin.  “With our federal tax code exceeding more than 70,000 pages, we can’t expect any individual, family, or small business to keep up.  It’s time that our tax code worked for the American people, not against them.”

“We want to make sure that every American keeps more of their hard-earned paycheck in their pocket.  We want to make sure that filing your family’s taxes is so simple and affordable that you don’t have to hire an expert,” said Mullin.  “Our framework lowers rates for everyone across the board, eliminates loopholes, and allows our businesses—both big and small—to be competitive in the market.  I look forward to working with my colleagues in the House and Senate to deliver on our promise to the American people to make our tax code fair and simple for the first time in over 30 years.”

Tim Murphy (R-PA, 18th)

“This framework is a solid foundation to build a more competitive Southwestern Pennsylvania economy with more opportunities for families to move ahead.

“As Congress gets to work on fixing the broken U.S. tax  code, my focus remains the same: simplifying the tax code; ensuring hardworking families keep more of their paychecks; and growing our local economy by making sure good-paying jobs stay in Southwestern Pennsylvania.”

Richard E. Neal (D-MA, 1st)

“Despite Republican claims that their tax plan would benefit the middle class, today’s analysis from the Tax Policy Center confirms that the Ryan-McConnell tax plan would overwhelmingly favor the rich at the expense of the middle class and hardworking Americans. Alarmingly, this analysis found that the middle class would be likely to pay more in taxes, directly contradicting claims made by Speaker Ryan and Leader McConnell. Paying for massive tax cuts for the wealthy at the direct expense of the middle class would cause great harm to our nation’s economy and further exacerbate income inequality. To put it simply, this tax plan is a gut punch to the middle class and a golden goose for the rich.”

Donald Norcross (D-NJ, 1st)

“Americans want more jobs, higher wages and tax relief. But instead of focusing on working families, the Republican tax reform plan is just another giveaway to billionaires and huge corporations. It fails the President’s own ‘Trump Test’ to not benefit the wealthy.

“This proposal crushes New Jersey’s middle-class by eliminating critical state and local tax deductions. More than a third of New Jersey tax filers would be hit with a large tax increase if Republicans get rid of the State and Local Tax deduction.

“This plan amounts to welfare for the wealthy, paid for out of the pockets of hardworking Americans. It’s a bait and switch. Republicans continue to avoid explaining details about how they plan to pay for this, which means Americans can expect cuts to the vital services they rely on, like Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.

“I urge Americans to reject this plan and demand that Republicans finally work with Democrats to actually create jobs, raise wages, and bring real relief to working families.”

Steve Pearce (R-NM, 2nd)

“Small businesses are the cornerstone and families are the backbone of our state. For too long, our nation’s complex, antiquated, and one-sided tax code has caused stress, undue burden, and hard-earned money to ensure compliance. This is simply wrong, and must change not only for the success of our communities, but for the success of New Mexico and the nation. The tax framework released today has the potential to finally bring the relief that has long been needed. Done right, it will strengthen the middle-class and working-class, ease the burden and stress on families, make small businesses a priority, and put America back on the competitive global playing field.

This framework simplifies the tax code for businesses, doubles the amount families and individuals are able to deduct, and has the potential to lower rate for individuals and families throughout the nation with a straightforward tax rate. These changes will allow everyday middle-class families to spend less on taxes and tax preparation allowing those hard-earned dollars to be saved and used where needed. Even more, this framework will help businesses expand, but also allow them to create jobs in communities with desperate for growth and services.

New Mexicans have struggled long enough to find good-paying jobs and deserve to keep more of their hard-earned money. I look forward to working with my colleagues and the Administration to reform America’s tax code to make New Mexican businesses and families a priority.”

Scott Perry (R-PA, 4th)

“The outline is good, but we need to see the brackets and some other details. As it stands now, I'm supportive of the proposal,” said Perry. “The American People deserve a tax code that prioritizes their needs - one that's simple, fair and easy to understand. Everyone should be able to keep more of their own hard-earned money, and our role as a government is to create the opportunity for small businesses to generate jobs and prosperity.”

Erik Paulsen (R-MN, 3rd)

“This is an exciting week for Minnesota’s middle-class families and small businesses,” said Congressman Paulsen. “After more than three decades since the last major tax reform, the framework released today outlines how fixing our broken tax code will lead to more jobs and bigger paychecks. Tax reform is about one thing: Restoring the hope of prosperity for American workers, their families, and, most importantly, the next generation.”

Jamie Raskin (D-MD, 8th)

“Republicans have apparently decided to approach tax reform with the same failed strategy that they employed for months in the health care debate. Instead of engaging in bipartisan discussions to come up with the best ideas, holding open hearings to solicit expert input, and publicly debating the merits of different policies, Republicans are reportedly meeting in secret behind closed-doors on a one-party basis to come up with a tax plan.  I fear that what follows will be an attempt to ram another lopsided proposal through Congress with no transparency, no public debate and no meaningful opportunity to improve the legislation.

“Democrats stand prepared and ready to work with Republicans to dramatically simplify the tax code, get rid of special interest loopholes and giveaways, and make the whole tax system fairer for middle-class families.  But real tax reform without blowing up the deficit will only be achievable through a thoughtful, public and bipartisan process—the exact opposite of what our friends across the aisle did with their serial health care repeal debacles. I urge the GOP leadership to abandon its secretive partisan tactics and work to engage Democrats – and the American people – in this important discussion so we can produce the best possible legislative outcome.  Regular order and bipartisan collaboration is the only way to make this work.”

David G. Reichert (R-WA, 8th)

"Over the years as I have traveled to all corners or Washington’s Eighth District and met with individuals and families from all walks of life, I have heard the same message over and over again: Americans want a simpler, fairer tax code that leads to more jobs and bigger paychecks.

Today, the House released a framework for a tax reform plan to put us on that path.

The framework outlines a plan that provides tax relief and a simplified code to middle-class families, making Americans’ day to day life more affordable so individuals and families can focus on the things that matter.

And it sets out a path for significant economic growth, by lowering tax rates for American businesses and encouraging investment here at home. America’s outdated tax code has weighed down American workers and businesses as our foreign competitors move forward. We simply must have a tax code that supports the creation of good-paying jobs in America.

This is a once in a generation opportunity that will improve the lives of American families for generations to come. I look forward to working with the Administration and my colleagues on both sides of the aisle over the coming months on a tax plan that will give Americans a raise, help our businesses compete, and simplify the tax code."

Tom Rice (R-SC, 7th)

“Since 1986 Washington has stood by and let the rest of the world tilt the playing field against the American worker. The decline of the American middle class and the growing income inequality that both Democrats and Republicans complain about is a direct result of the continued deterioration of America for a place to do business, in large part because we’ve failed to make ourselves competitive.

Our current tax code puts American businesses at a disadvantage and that translates to the loss of millions of middle class American jobs. If we really want to grow the middle class, give them a raise, reduce income inequality, and stop jobs from leaving our shores, we must make our tax code competitive in the world. That has got to be our number one goal and this plan helps get us there.”

Martha Roby (R-AL, 2nd)

“It was a productive meeting, and the message I would relay to those I represent is simple: We want to lower tax rates for every taxpayer so that Americans can keep and invest more of what they earn,” Roby said. “You should be able to keep more of your money in your pocket.”

“I’m ready to get this done. It is time to deliver some meaningful results to the American people. Tax reform presents a tremendous opportunity to move this country ahead, and I’m committed to getting it done.”

Mike (AL) Rogers (R-AL, 3rd)

“I strongly support the tax reform framework outlined today by President Trump and the House Republican Leadership. Tax reform is the single best way to grow our economy. Hard working Americans are due a fairer and simpler tax code.

“The tax reform framework is just the first step towards helping families keep more of what they earn, create more good-paying jobs in America and help small businesses.

“I look forward to working with President Trump as we work to make our broken tax code fairer and simpler for the folks across East Alabama and the country so they can keep more of what they earn.

Todd Rokita (R-IN, 4th)

“I’m ready to reform our nation’s tax code. It will help your wallet and it will help this business and businesses just like it. We have some of the best products in the world, and it’s time our country’s policies give our businesses the ability to thrive.”

Peter J. Roskam (R-IL, 6th)

“This is a transformational moment we have to reform a tax code that hasn’t been updated in over 30 years. This is about improving the lives of every single American. It’s about increasing paychecks and giving families, working students and small businesses an easier and fairer tax code. American families are counting on Congress and the White House to work together to fix a tax code that is too complicated and too unfair,” said Congressman Peter Roskam (R-IL). “This framework puts us on the right path to accomplishing those goals and I invite my Democrat colleagues to join us in making the changes necessary to enact common-sense, fiscally-responsible measures that grows our economy, supports our middle-class, defends our workers and protects our jobs.”

David Rouzer (R-NC, 7th)

“This week, the House, the Senate, and the Trump Administration released a tax reform framework to bring back jobs and money from overseas and create real prosperity for all Americans.  This is a tax reform plan focused on simplicity and growth that will lead to significant investments and generate better paying jobs, while also enabling every individual and family to keep more of what they earn.  For southeastern North Carolina, this is a first step to enacting into law a tax code that would benefit every individual and family —  including our farm families and small businesses — and so simple you would be able to file your tax return on a postcard.”

And even more Tax Reform Statements from The House of Reps

Lamborn Statement on GOP Tax Reform
Doug Lamborn (R-CO, 5th)

“This new framework overhauls the 1986 tax code to reflect where we have come as a nation, taking tried and true principles and applying them for the biggest economic benefit. The code is not only simplified, but includes several measures that will help all Americans. Most notably it provides immediate expensing, which means businesses can immediately write off the cost of new investments for at least five years. This is an unprecedented opportunity for businesses to grow. Also, families at all levels of the tax bracket will benefit from the simple and fair new model with income tax rate cuts. It retains incentives, gives businesses deductions, brings trillions of dollars stranded overseas back home for investment, and creates more jobs with bigger paychecks.”

Sam Johnson on Tax Reform Blueprint

America’s current tax code is complicated and broken, and right now we have an opportunity to fundamentally reform it for the 21st Century. Even more important, tax reform should reward hardworking American families. This blueprint is a first step. We must get tax reform right, and I look forward to working with my fellow Ways and Means colleagues on behalf of America’s taxpayers.

This is a total win for America in every measurable way. For hardworking families and individuals, this means more take-home pay. For American companies, it means no longer having to pay the world’s highest tax rate but, instead, being able to create new jobs, increase wages, and compete globally on a level playing field. For everyone, it means a much stronger American economy supported by a fairer, simpler, more understandable tax code.

REPS. ROYBAL-ALLARD, LUJAN GRISHAM, GUTIÉRREZ STATEMENT ON OCTOBER 5TH DACA DEADLINE
Luis Gutierrez (D-IL, 4th)

“The Trump Administration first rescinded DACA, upending the lives of nearly 800,000 Dreamers, young patriots who have done everything right. Then, DHS proceeded to issue an unrealistic and arbitrary DACA renewal deadline of October 5th. This meant that 154,000 Dreamers had 30 days to find legal assistance, fill out renewal paperwork and pay a $495 fee or risk losing their status and getting deported. DHS has not done any outreach or provided support to these 154,000 Dreamers to ensure they can meet this unrealistic deadline and keep their status. Instead, DHS Acting Secretary Duke has chosen to undermine DACA renewal efforts by creating more fear by stating that DACA recipient data can be shared with ICE.

Gaetz Tells NFL Tax Breaks to Take a Knee
Matt Gaetz (R-FL, 1st)

The NFL League Office has received a special tax carveout since 1966, when the tax code first listed “professional football leagues” as trade organizations. Though individual teams are not tax-exempt, the NFL League Office is. They are responsible for the construction and development of new stadiums, paid for with over 6.5 billion taxpayer dollars. Tax-exempt revenues for professional sports leagues are higher than $2 billion. According to the Internal Revenue Service, businesses that conduct operations for profit on a “cooperative basis” should not qualify for tax-exempt treatment, yet a special exemption is made for professional football leagues.

Reps. Hunter and Garamendi Raise Concerns Over the Trump Administration’s Decision to Waive the Jones Act

John Garamendi (D-CA, 3rd)

Congressman Duncan Hunter (R-CA) and John Garamendi (D-CA), Chairman and Ranking Member respectively of the Subcommittee on the Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation, raised concerns over the Trump Administration’s decision to issue a 10-day waiver of the Jones Act to allegedly improve the flow of relief shipments into Puerto Rico. The Jones Act requires that goods traveling between U.S. ports of call be carried on U.S.-made and U.S.-flagged ships and manned by American crews. Contrary to many published reports, adequate domestic shipping capability exists, and waiving the Jones Act requirement will not speed up relief for Puerto Rico.

Goodlatte Statement on Tax Reform Framework
Bob Goodlatte (R-VA, 6th)

“It’s been 30 years since the last major tax code overhaul. In that time the tax code as we know it has only grown more complex and unfair. Congress has the opportunity to create a tax system that works for the American people, and it’s important that we act now. The tax reform framework unveiled today is a positive step forward in getting tax reform signed into law that lowers rates for individuals and families and helps level the playing field for American businesses. I look forward to reviewing the legislative text produced by the House Ways and Means Committee as this process continues. We must provide tax relief that creates a simpler, fairer tax code, allows hardworking families to keep more of their money, and encourages businesses to invest in the United States.”

Rep. Tom Graves Statement on Tax Reform Framework

“This framework turns the page on our complicated and broken tax system. It’s simpler, flatter and fairer than the current tax code. It will put more money in the pockets of hard-working Americans. It also promotes economic growth and private-sector job creation by slashing the corporate tax rate – currently the highest in the developed world – and ensuring fair treatment for small businesses. Congress needs to get the final product to the president’s desk as quickly as possible.”

Hartzler Statement on Newly Unveiled Tax Reform Plan

Our tax reform plan will immediately benefit the average American and small business owner. Families will see an increase in their child deduction tax credit, and most Americans will now be able to fill out their taxes on a paper the size of a postcard. The days of spending hours poring over complicated documents and exemptions will be replaced by a simpler system with much lower taxes for small businesses and the middle class.

Higgins Issues Statement on Tax Reform Framework
Clay Higgins (R-LA, 3rd)

It’s been more than three decades since we’ve reformed our tax code. The current 74,608-page federal tax code is outdated and overly complex. American families deserve to keep more of their hard-earned paychecks, and we need bold reform to really grow our economy. That’s what this GOP foundational tax reform framework delivers. Of course, my colleagues and I will engage in vigorous debate regarding details and concerns, and this initial framework will change. However, this cornerstone upon...which we will build...does indeed reflect a fairer, simpler tax code that strengthens our economy, creates job growth, and allows individual Americans, as well as all American businesses, to keep more of what they’ve earned. I strongly support significant reform of our tax code so that everyday American families and small businesses can take charge of their finances and spend, save, or invest however they see fit. I urge all of my colleagues, on both sides of the aisle to come together and get this thing done for all Americans.
