Senators Decry Lack Of Action On Disaster Aid For Suffering States
by: Senator David Perdue (R-GA)
April 11, 2019
The senators have worked to negotiate in good faith since 2018 on a bipartisan disaster relief package to provide funding across the continental United States as well as Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands for regions that have experienced droughts, flooding, hurricanes, storms, volcanoes, wildfires, and other natural disasters. Many of these states, including Georgia, have not received the federal disaster assistance they were promised months ago. Other states would see a down payment on disasters that have occurred more recently, such as in the Midwest where flooding is ongoing, and in Alabama and Georgia where tornadoes devastated lives and communities earlier this year.

Peters Calls on Colleagues to Support His Bipartisan Legislation to Expand R&D for Fuel Efficient Technologies
by: Senator Gary Peters (D-MI)
April 11, 2019
“Transportation is responsible for roughly two thirds of our national consumption of petroleum and one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. But imagine a future where we could produce low cost – secure – clean energy technologies to move people and goods easily across our nation. Imagine if we could then sell our advanced American technology and products to the rest of the world,” said Senator Peters. “That is a future – that working together – we can achieve… Rapidly emerging technologies have the potential not only help reduce air emissions – their development would help create jobs in Michigan and across the nation—jobs that cannot be outsourced.”

Portman, Hassan Introduce Bipartisan Legislation to Improve Transparency of Federal Advisory Committees
by: Senator Rob Portman (R-OH)
April 11, 2019
“American taxpayers deserve greater transparency and accountability from their government, and improving the transparency of federal advisory committees is essential to accomplishing that goal,” said Senator Portman. “I’m particularly pleased that this bipartisan measure will strengthen the independence of federal advisory committees and close loopholes that permit agencies to skirt existing transparency requirements. At the end of the day American taxpayers deserve evidence-based, rather than interest-based, decisions by their government, and this bill will help to ensure that.”

by: Mark Pocan (D-WI, 2nd)
April 11, 2019
“Prime Minister Netanyahu’s campaign threat to annex the West Bank signals an alarming and unprecedented violation of human rights and international law. Pappas, Fitzpatrick, Kuster and Delgado Introduce Bipartisan Bill to Assist Veterans & Service Members Exposed to PFAS Contaminants
by: Chris Pappas (D-NH, 1st)
April 10, 2019
Congressman Chris Pappas (NH-01) introduced the PFAS Registry Act with a bipartisan coalition of lawmakers including Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-01), Rep. Annie Kuster (NH-02), and Rep. Antonio Delgado (NY-19), legislation that would create a national database for service members and veterans experiencing health problems possibly due to contamination from per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). PFAS chemicals, like perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), have emerged as a widespread contaminant to the drinking water sources of military bases across the country due to their use in firefighting foam employed by the Armed Services. This bipartisan bill would allow military personnel and veterans to receive updates on recent scientific developments on the effects of PFAS exposure, availability of possible treatment options, and information on what resources may be available to address their health concerns. Congressman Pappas has led efforts in Congress that seek to uncover the health impacts of emerging contaminants in water supplies. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) is introducing companion legislation in the Senate, which is cosponsored by Senator Mike Rounds (R-SD).

April 10, 2019
Rep. Scott Peters (CA-52) unveiled The Climate Playbook, a comprehensive plan he compiled of already existing legislation authored by both Republicans and Democrats, many of which have already earned bipartisan support. They are organized into categories that include ways to reduce emissions from a variety of economic sectors, promote energy efficiency, reduce pollution, increase investment in research and development, spur more investment in adaptation and resiliency, develop a workforce to make all this possible, and support workers and communities displaced or impacted by this transition to clean energy.

by: Dean Phillips (D-MN, 3rd)
April 10, 2019
“The medical device tax has overstayed its welcome, and I am pleased to join my colleagues from both sides of the aisle to push for its permanent repeal,” said Phillips. “Too many jobs have been lost and too much innovation has been stifled due to this tax which disproportionately impacts our community. Our government should be supporting progress and new technology, especially in health care. The medical device tax is counterproductive to that mission, and that’s why it has to go.”

Bill to Protect Free and Open Internet Passes House with Rep. Porter Amendment
by: Katie Porter (D-CA, 45th)
April 10, 2019
“As we vote to restore a free and open internet, we should also vote to provide oversight of agency tasked to protect consumers,” Porter said. “It is important that the FCC acts as the cop on the beat when internet service providers misbehave. When the FCC fines against a bad actor, that fine should be collected. If the FCC is not following through on protecting consumers, Congress should know – so it can take oversight action, if necessary.”

“Our bill will put us one step closer to making toxic workplace harassment and discrimination a dark memory of the past,” said Congresswoman Pressley. “This is for the brave women of the Boston Fire Department, for the hotel workers I worked alongside when I was scrapping money together to help my family, for the transgender men and women who face discrimination for living their truth. This is for those workers who shared their stories and instead of justice, faced retaliation. Now is the time to push the conversations and the policies so that those who have been suffering in silence feel seen and represented in our democracy.”

North American Trucking Associations Issue Statement of Support for NAFTA

Source: North American Trucking Associations

American Trucking Associations, along with the Canadian Trucking Alliance and Cámara Nacional del Autotransporte de Carga – CANACAR – the three largest trucking industry organizations in North America issued a joint statement encouraging their governments who are currently renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement to craft an updated pact that benefits all nations.

“The trucking industries in Canada, Mexico, and the United States have all benefited significantly from NAFTA and we, the national trucking associations from all three countries, urge negotiators to update the trade agreement in a manner that continues to benefit trade,” the statement reads in part. “We strongly encourage our governments to update NAFTA to keep North America competitive internationally. In this endeavor, making border crossings and rules governing international commercial transportation more efficient is a crucial element that will only help our industries make North America stronger.”

The full statement is available here.

“Trucking and trade are synonymous,” said ATA President and CEO Chris Spear. “In the more than two decades since NAFTA was enacted, we have seen strong growth in trade – the majority of which is moved by truck – between the United States, Mexico and Canada. It is vital to the health of our industry and our economy that we maintain and strengthen these relationships.”

“Cross-border trade supports over 46,000 U.S. trucking jobs, including 31,000 U.S. truck drivers, and generates $6.5 billion in revenue for our industry annually,” said ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello. “As the U.S. renegotiates this agreement with Canada and Mexico, we urge them to keep the tremendous benefits to our economy and our industry in mind.”

American Trucking Associations is the largest national trade association for the trucking industry. Through a federation of 50 affiliated state trucking associations and industry-related conferences and councils, ATA is the voice of the industry America depends on most to move our nation’s freight. JONES APPLAUDS TRUMP ON NAFTA RENEGOTIATION; CALLS FOR END TO SPECIAL ACCESS FOR MEXICAN TRUCKS

Source: House Representative Walter B. Jones (R-NC, 3rd)

Washington, D.C. - September 12, 2017 (The Ponder News) -- Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) applauded President Donald J. Trump for his initiative to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and bring jobs back to America. As the Trump administration negotiates with Mexico and Canada this month, Congressman Jones is urging them to demand an end to the unfair special access to U.S. highways given to Mexican long-haul trucks in the original NAFTA agreement negotiated by President Bill Clinton.

“Ross Perot was right,” said Congressman Jones. “That ‘giant sucking sound’ we’ve heard has been the jobs of thousands of hard-working Americans going south to Mexico. It is unacceptable, and it is refreshing to have a president stand up for American workers instead of selling them out.”

In a letter sent today to America’s chief NAFTA negotiator, United States Trade Representative, Robert Lighthizer, Jones continued: “This administration has an incredible opportunity to right so many wrongs embedded in NAFTA. I know you are working hard to address those problems, and I would like to draw your attention to one in particular.”

“At the end of the original NAFTA negotiations, President Clinton and his team caved in to a demand from Mexico to allow Mexican long-haul trucks and Mexican drivers to cross the border and freely operate on American highways. That was a slap in the face. It permitted Mexican carriers, whose safety has never been certified as meeting U.S. standards, to take work away from law-abiding American truckers and to put the safety of American motorists on our highways at risk.”

“As you fight to level the playing field with Mexico, a good place start would be to close American highways to the Mexican truck fleet. American truck drivers do not want reciprocal access to Mexican highways, so no special treatment should be given in the other direction.”

President Trump started the process of renegotiating NAFTA by sending Congress a statutorily required 90-day notification on May 18, 2017. Negotiations began on August 16, 2017. The second round of talks concluded in Mexico earlier this month. The third round is expected to begin on September 23 in Ottawa, Canada.

DUNN, FLORIDA REPS. URGE NEW TRADE REMEDIES TO PROTECT FLORIDA AGRICULTURE

Source: House Representative Neal Dunn (R-FL, 2nd)

Washington, D.C. - September 1, 2017 (The Ponder News) -- As NAFTA renegotiations continue this weekend in Mexico City, Congressman Neal Dunn, M.D. (FL-02), led a group of 20 Florida House members in support of the Administration’s efforts to protect Florida agriculture from Mexico’s unfair trading practices.

“The new rules for seasonal and perishable products” sought by the Administration, the lawmakers wrote to U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, “will ensure that these producers, who can only sell during certain periods of the year and are especially vulnerable to trade surges, have recourse to viable trade remedies when faced with unfair trade practices.”

The remedies sought include a “separate domestic industry provision for perishable and seasonal products” in countervailing duty and anti-dumping suits.

“We applaud the Administration’s support for U.S. perishable and seasonal sectors and stand ready to work with the Administration on improving trade remedy coverage for these sectors…” the lawmakers stated.

Congressman Steve Russell (OK-5) introduced H.R. 3062, a bill which would ensure that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Aircraft Registry Office in Oklahoma City remains open in the event of a government shutdown. The government shutdown in 2013 resulted in an unprecedented closure of the FAA Aircraft Registry Office in Oklahoma City and a furlough of its employees. This closure had a severe impact on aviation industries and national security efforts. This must not happen again in the event of another government shutdown. FDA Announces Action Plan to Lower Cost of Prescription Drugs that Mirrors Senators Cotton, Collins, McCaskill, and Franken Bipartisan Bill
Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR)
June 28, 2017

"The steady rise in prescription drug costs over the last several years has left many Arkansans wondering just how much more they can take. And as health-care premiums rise under Obamacare, there's now even less room in family budgets to spend more on prescription drugs," said Senator Cotton. "Regrettably, the current FDA backlog of new generic-drug applications awaiting approval is only making this problem worse. Expediting the approval process for both the first and the second generic and requiring the FDA to make a decision in a timely fashion will increase competition in the prescription-drug market and help lower costs for Arkansas families."

Sen. Cruz: WOTUS Withdrawal Is a Welcome Change For Texas Families, Farmers and Ranchers
Senator Ted Cruz- (R - TX)
June 28, 2017

"The announcement to withdraw the Waters of the United States rule is a welcome change for hardworking families, farmers, and ranchers in Texas,” Sen. Cruz said. “The Obama administration's WOTUS rule massively expanded the scope of federal authority over land and waterways in the United States, making it harder for Texans to provide for their families. This withdrawal proposal reflects what Americans overwhelmingly believe: that we can have both clean water and regulations that don’t stifle economic growth and job creation. I applaud Administrator Pruitt for his leadership on this issue, and look forward to working with my colleagues to further roll back harmful regulations.”
