March 31, 2020

Commissioner Ricardo Lara
Insurance Commissioner
300 Capitol Mall, 17th Floor
Sacramento, CA 95814

Dear Commissioner Lara:

We urge you to exercise all authority to ensure the insurance companies comply with their business interruption policies. During this crisis, we must do everything possible to mitigate the devastating impact on small businesses due to the coronavirus pandemic.

As you know, many businesses have in good faith purchased and paid for business interruption insurance to cover the loss of business income sustained due to a necessary suspension of the business operations. However some insurers are choosing to deny these business interruption claims and not uphold their responsibility to help cover these insured losses. Without immediate action to address the denial of business interruption insurance claims, many businesses like our local restaurants, hotels, bars, small tourist shops and countless other businesses that are staples of our local communities will simply never resume service. California in particular has been battered year after year by earthquakes and fires and small businesses have not fully recovered from those previous disasters.

The coronavirus poses significant challenges to many small businesses and we are urging you to exercise all authority to have insurance companies comply with their business interruption insurance to cover losses caused by a California statewide business shutdown ordered to prevent the spread of coronavirus. During this crisis, we must do what it takes to work together to help our small businesses survive and recover. We appreciate your strong support to help California small business owners remain solvent during the coronavirus pandemic and keep employees on payroll until things stabilize.

Thank you for your leadership attention to this urgent matter. We look forward to working with you until this crisis is resolved.

Congressman Mike Thompson is proud to represent California’s 5th Congressional District, which includes all or part of Contra Costa, Lake, Napa, Solano and Sonoma Counties. He is a senior member of the House Committee on Ways and Means where he chairs the Subcommittee on Select Revenue Measures. Rep. Thompson is Chairman of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force. He is also Co-Chair of the bipartisan, bicameral Congressional Wine Caucus and a member of the fiscally-conservative Blue Dog Coalition.

Cincinnati, OH - March 30, 2020 - (The Ponder News) -- U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) announced that he will donate his salary through the end of May to five regional organizations across the state of Ohio helping those impacted by the coronavirus pandemic: the Cleveland Foundation COVID-19 Rapid Response Fund, the Columbus Foundation Emergency Response Fund, the United Way and Greater Cincinnati Foundation local nonprofit fund, the Southeast Ohio Food Bank, and the Greater Toledo Community Foundation Covid-19 Response. Portman released the following statement:

“Many Ohioans are hurting right now due to the coronavirus pandemic, struggling to pay their bills and make ends meet. Many individuals are seeing their paychecks disappear and small business owners throughout the state are making sacrifices as they struggle to keep their doors open. Our non-profits are also under tremendous pressure. I am donating to the following five organizations who are helping in every region of Ohio: the Cleveland Foundation COVID-19 Rapid Response Fund, the Columbus Foundation Emergency Response Fund, the United Way and Greater Cincinnati Foundation COVID-19 local nonprofit fund, the Southeast Ohio Food Bank, and the Greater Toledo Community Foundation Covid-19 Response. These organizations are representative of so many great nonprofits and volunteers that are responding to the urgent needs of individuals, families, and small businesses across Ohio during this coronavirus crisis.”

Rob Portman is a United States Senator from the state of Ohio, a position he has held since he was first elected in 2010, running a campaign that focused on common-sense conservative ideas to help create jobs and get the deficit under control. Rob won with a margin of 57 to 39 percent, winning 82 of Ohio’s 88 counties. In 2016, he was re-elected, winning by an even larger margin of 58 to 37 percent and winning 84 out of Ohio’s 88 counties.

Meadows Resigns House Seat to become Trump's Chief of Staff

Washington, D.C. - March 30, 2020 - (The Ponder News) -- U.S. Representative Mark Meadows has resigned his House Seat to become President Donald Trump's Chief of Staff.

Recently, he was notified that he may have come into contact with the COVID-19 virus, so he got tested. As a precaution, he self-quarantined himself, but continued fervently working from home as he continues to transition to Chief of Staff. He has since learned that he has tested negative for the virus.

In December, Meadows announced his transition by stating,

“For everything there is a season. After prayerful consideration and discussion with family, today I’m announcing that my time serving Western North Carolina in Congress will come to a close at the end of this term.

This was a decision I struggled with greatly. These last 8 years, I have been so blessed to serve the people of NC-11 and help give a voice to millions of Americans who feel Washington, DC has forgotten them. Since serving alongside President Trump, I have been a witness to historic economic prosperity, unemployment levels I only dreamed of when I took office, tax and regulatory reforms that are putting the American worker first, our Israeli embassy moved to Jerusalem, and trade deals that were once thought impossible. I have seen our law enforcement and first responders receive the support they deserve and our military once again put on a path to maintain its superiority. Through it all, I am so thankful to have been able to serve and give back to the great country I call home.

My work with President Trump and his administration is only beginning. This President has accomplished incredible results for the country in just 3 years, and I’m fully committed to staying in the fight with him and his team to build on those successes and deliver on his promises for the years to come. I’ve always said Congress is a temporary job, but the fight to return Washington, DC to its rightful owner, We The People, has only just begun.

To the people of Western North Carolina: it’s been my honor to be your Congressman. Thank you for your trust, faith, and support. God bless you.”

Indiana Attorney General Warns Hoosiers to Beware Fake Coronavirus (COVID-19) Tests

Source: U.S. Representative Brett S. Guthrie (R-KY, 2nd)

Indianapolis, IN - March 30, 2020 - (The Ponder News) -- Attorney General Curtis Hill is warning Hoosiers of scammers taking advantage of the scarcity of COVID-19 tests by falsely claiming to be able to provide testing.

“Consumers are at risk not only of losing money from these scams,” Attorney General Hill said, “but of getting dangerously false information about their infection status. We’re working to protect Indiana residents and ensure better outcomes.”

There are currently no tests that can be self-administered at home to find out whether someone has COVID-19.

The only tests currently available in Indiana require a doctor's order and specimen collection done by a medical professional. At this time, there is no FDA-approved blood test to determine whether someone has COVID-19.

Because conditions are constantly changing regarding the availability of testing and decisions about who qualifies, Hoosiers should keep up with the latest information by consulting credible sources.

The Indiana State Department of Health's COVID-19 Call Center can be reached 24/7 at 877-826-0011, and the agency regularly updates the coronavirus.in.gov website.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention maintains online information about testing, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration also provides in-depth information related to these topics.

As always, if you encounter suspected scams, you may report them online to the Consumer Protection Division of the Office of the Indiana Attorney General. If you need additional information regarding the Office’s Consumer Protection Division, please call 1-800-382-5516.

CARES ACT HELPS WORKERS AND BUSINESSES STAY AFLOAT
Source: U.S. Representative Steve Scalise (R-LA, 1st)
March 29, 2020
"This bill does a lot for both of those groups of people you talked about. For families, this is something that President Trump talked about, he wanted this bill focused on helping families and on helping businesses stay afloat while we get through this. And so, in the bill you've got one section that's dedicated to getting individual assistance to families, so you've got $1,200 per person, $500 per child, there's some income caps on it but ultimately, for families whether they're working, even seniors, are eligible for this. The IRS is going to operate the program for people who already filed tax returns; it will automatically come through the IRS. For seniors, it's going to go through Social Security. Now let's shift over to the business side, Jeanine, and what you have is ability, the most powerful program is going to be the 7(a) loan program, it's a forgivable loan, meaning even if you laid off people but if you've kept your employees, this will pick up the cost of the payroll for your workers as well as all your fixed costs: your rent, your utilities, those kind of fixed costs for businesses, small and medium sized all the way up to 500 employees will be able to go to your local bank, not through the SBA because we know this is going to be something millions small businesses participate in, so we allowed your local banks to be able to write these loans. So, go talk to your local banker Monday morning if you haven't already, and there's going to be a loan that you'll be able to take out for your payroll costs and for your expenses, your fixed expenses, and that loan will be forgiven at the time that the first payment comes due. That's going to be critical to keeping a lot of small businesses alive. And then, of course, for large businesses over 500 employees there's going to be a separate program. You've heard a lot about the airlines, they of course will be eligible for this, but any other business over 500 employees will be eligible as well. The goal is to help families get through this, and to make sure we hold on to our businesses so there are jobs to come back to when we get through this crisis."

FEAR VS. FACTS

by Shonda Ponder, editor

The Ponder News does not spread fear. We spread truth.

We do not tell you what the ABC news network tells you. We do not tell you what NBC CBS MSN CNN PBR or anyone else tells you.

We do not quote the New York times except to draw attention to their Mis- information in order to correct it. We don't even quote the Texarkana Gazette or the Houston Chronicle for the same reason.

Our news comes directly from congressman, or any other people groups or organization who are actually involved.

We rely on information from press releases from those organizations. Those press releases contain actual quotes from actual people said in the way that those people intend for it to be said, complete with links that verify the information that they put out.

So for those of you who keep accusing me of purposely spreading fear as a pastime, perhaps you should also contact my 3000 sources and tell them that. My sources include every congressman and senator in the United States.

And every news item that I post has a source listed so you can do that.

Personally, I don't understand why anybody would not want to be informed in this day and age about what is really happening.

Just my two cents worth.

Source: U.S. Representative Chip Roy (R-TX, 21st)

This bill provides needed relief for the many Central Texas small businesses – restaurants, hotels, music venues, bars, and others – suffering through the government-mandated “social distancing” period. I want to make sure workers in the 21st Congressional District of Texas have jobs to return to once we defeat coronavirus. And defeat it we will.

Roe Supports the CARES Act to Help Struggling Americans
Source: U.S. Representative Phil Roe (R-TN, 1st)
March 27, 2020
"This pandemic is affecting Americans across the country in every way possible – emotionally, physically and financially. I strongly support the CARES Act to help Americans struggling because of the unprecedented response we are undertaking to stop the spread of this deadly virus. This is not a typical economic recovery package because never before has our country shut down our economy intentionally. I am grateful for President Trump’s leadership and the work of the brave men and women in our public health community working around the clock to keep Americans safe. East Tennesseans should know their government will take whatever actions are necessary to ensure we restart and rebuild our economy as quickly as possible. This package is a major step in that direction. I hope it gives everyone the peace of mind that they can afford to stay safe during this critical period of social distancing and isolation, and help us in our effort to defeat this terrible threat to public health.”

Rep. Roybal-Allard Applauds Passage of Historic Families & Workers-First Coronavirus Legislation and Its Emergency Relief for California
Source: U.S. Representative Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-CA, 40th)
March 27, 2020
“I am proud to support the CARES Act, a historic piece of legislation, as part of House Democrats’ ongoing effort to bring urgently needed relief to families, workers, and small businesses in our 40th District and across America,” said Rep. Roybal-Allard. “While this legislation is a crucial step in the right direction, more still needs to be done. As Americans nationwide face uncertainty about their physical and financial well-being, I will keep fighting for additional policies that save lives and support our nation’s families, workers, and small businesses. Congress must ensure all Americans have the comfort of knowing that the government is there for them. This requires a coordinated, fully-funded, whole-of-government response. I am pleased that thanks to the hard work of Congressional Democrats, including our amazing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the Senate’s corporate-focused coronavirus bill was turned into a bipartisan bill that puts the needs of America’s workers ahead of corporations. I will keep fighting alongside my Democratic colleagues and across the aisle to put Families and Workers First, including immigrant families and workers who did not receive relief from this bill to stay healthy and make ends meet.

Coronavirus and ibuprofen: Separating fact from fiction

March 17, 2020
Although we don't yet know whether ibuprofen has a particular effect on the severity or length of illnesses caused by coronavirus - either in healthy people or those with underlying conditions - Dr Charlotte Warren-Gash, of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, says, especially for vulnerable patients, "it seems sensible to stick to paracetamol as first choice".
Here, at The Ponder, we've been getting private messages from people who are forwarding the recording of the guy telling us frantically not to use Advil ibuprofen. As with most stuff that is forwarded like that, I use the opportunity to do some research on the subject. Here is one of the articles I found that I am posting for your information:
