DEFAZIO ANNOUNCES NEW TOOL TO HELP NON-FILERS ACCESS COVID-19 ECONOMIC IMPACT PAYMENTS
Source: U.S. Representative Peter DeFazio (D-OR, 4th)
April 10, 2020
After the 2008 financial crisis, 3.5 million of our nation’s most vulnerable did not receive a stimulus check because of bureaucratic red tape,” said Rep. DeFazio. “We cannot allow the same thing to happen now, which is why I called for a method to help those who need it most access economic impact payments. This new tool will give those who do not usually file, including those with too little income, a simple, free and secure way to provide the IRS with basic information so they can receive their Economic Impact Payments as soon as possible. While I will continue to push Treasury and IRS to automatically provide payments to people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and to individuals who receive Veterans Affairs (VA) compensation and pensions, this is an important first step towards helping vulnerable populations weather these uncertain times.

The Cuban regime has shamelessly exploited this COVID-19 pandemic to engage in a misleading medical diplomacy campaign by trafficking doctors from whom they pocket as much as 80 percent of their salaries, confiscate their passports, and impose strict monitoring. The regime is also spreading dangerous disinformation about the virus worldwide with the aim of dividing the international community. These are just the latest examples of the regime’s use of propaganda to build a positive image abroad and distract from its systemic human rights violations against the Cuban people. Cotton Statement on the Expulsion of Cuban Diplomats from U.S. Soil

Washington, D.C. - October 4, 2017 (The Ponder News) -- Senator Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas) has released the following statement on the expulsion of Cuban diplomats from U.S. soil:

"I encouraged the president to expel Cuban diplomats from U.S. soil, and I'm glad that he did. The Castro regime has shown no respect or concern for the safety of our diplomats, and until the regime brings those responsible for these attacks to justice, every one of those Cuban diplomats should be declared persona non grata. It's time we held the Castro regime responsible for its crimes against both the Cuban and the American people."

U.S. Rep. McGovern Statement on U.S. Embassy in Cuba, Travel Warning to Cuba

Washington, D.C. - October 2, 2017 - (The Ponder News) -- Congressman Jim McGovern (D-MA), a senior House Democrat and leading voice on U.S.-Cuba relations, released the following statement regarding Secretary Tillerson’s recent meeting with Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla and the decision to withdraw all non-essential personnel from the U.S. Embassy in Havana and issue a travel advisory warning Americans not to travel to Cuba:

“Keeping our American diplomats safe and secure must always be our first priority. I strongly support U.S. and Cuban efforts to determine who is responsible for the harmful sonar attacks and ensure they are held accountable.

“Today’s announcement and indefinite suspension of visa processing and consular services by the Trump Administration, however, is a dramatic overreaction and the latest example of a White House with a stunning ignorance on how to best conduct foreign policy. This would make it even harder for Cuban and American families to travel and visit loved ones.

“It is essential that the State Department immediately develop practical contingency plans to continue to allow families to travel from Cuba. Americans with family and loved ones in Cuba should not be forced to face such unnecessary barriers, especially when so many are still recovering from the devastating hurricanes that have hit the region.

“Americans cannot afford a return to the failed Cold War isolationist policies that divided families for 50 years. Hundreds of thousands of Americans visit Cuba every year. Our businesses are engaged in agricultural sales and other business opportunities. U.S. and Cuban agencies engage in cooperation on drug trafficking, human smuggling, search and rescue operations, and other security issues. An Embassy presence is vital to maintaining those relationships.

“Any move to sever or diminish diplomatic ties or travel would be a dangerous step backward that would jeopardize the progress our countries have made. Americans need strong leadership, but the Trump administration seems more interested in abandoning diplomacy when we need it most. Our nations must work together to ensure the safety of American personnel without dividing families.”

Congresswoman Lee Statement on Travel Warning & U.S. Embassy Drawdown in Cuba

Washington, D.C. - October 2, 2017 - (The Ponder News) -- Congresswoman Lee released the following statement on Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s announcement removing personnel from the U.S. embassy in Cuba and issuing a travel warning for Americans:

“The safety and security of Foreign Service personnel must always be our priority, regardless of where they serve. I appreciate the cooperation of the Cuban government in the investigation of attacks on U.S. diplomats and their families and I strongly support efforts to hold those responsible accountable.

“Today’s announcement suspending visa processing and consular services indefinitely is an overreaction that will only serve to harm Cuban and American families. Especially in light of the recent hurricanes affecting the region, the United States government should be doing everything in our power to ensure loved ones can reach each other in their time of need. Similarly, the travel warning issued by the State Department is an overly-broad and unnecessary response. Instead, the State Department should be developing contingency plans so that families can continue to travel from Cuba safely.

“It is my hope that responsible diplomacy will prevail, so we can get to the bottom of these attacks. I will continue to urge this Administration to reject the extreme calls within its party to further escalate tensions, and instead work to protect diplomatic ties with Cuba. We simply cannot afford to return to the failed Cold War policies that divided our nations and families for far too long.”

Davis Statement on GOP Tax Reform Framework and Retreat
Rodney Davis (R-IL, 13th)

“Today House Republicans united around middle-class Americans who are being crushed by our outdated tax code,” said Davis. “Illinois residents know all too well the impact high taxes are having on their families’ ability to save and get ahead and our state’s ability to compete for good-paying jobs. Our plan uses Illinois as an example of what not to do. We want to cut tax rates for individuals, simplify but maintain important middle-class deductions, and make it so American businesses can compete globally. There’s still much more work to be done, but this is our shot at changing the lives of each working American for the better and I hope we get bipartisan support to get it done.”

Re-opening this area to allow a foreign company to strip mine our public lands without paying American taxpayers hardly any royalties would devastate surrounding economies and threaten critical drinking water sources. This legislation provides significant tax relief that will assist Floridians and others who have been impacted by recent storms. Among others, by eliminating the tax penalty on early retirement plan withdrawals, we can help folks access the capital required to make these repairs and get back on their feet. Op-Ed: White House must formally declare the opioid crisis a national emergency
Brian Fitzpatrick, (R PA, 8th)

A little over a month ago, President Trump announced his intention to declare the opioid epidemic a national emergency. He was right—it is an emergency. Drug overdoses killed almost 54,000 people in 2015, and the majority of those deaths involved an opioid. Last year about 12 million Americans misused an opioid, and the overdose death toll rose to 65,000. The opioid crisis is cutting deep scars in our communities, and in some states, is taking more of our loved ones than car accidents, suicides and firearms combined. It is absolutely an emergency and we urge the president to move quickly in formally declaring the opioid crisis a national health emergency.

Legal Aid, Cuba, Net Neutrality, Weapons, GOP Agenda

On June 16, 2016, Rep. Matt Salmon (R-AZ, 5th) announced the tenth bill in his 2016 Shrink our Spending Initiative to highlight and cut wasteful taxpayer-funded programs. Upon introduction of his latest bill to eliminate the duplicative and wasteful Legal Services Corporation, he said, “Legal Aid services are a very common mechanism to assist our society’s poor who need legal representation. But these programs are funded at the state and local level, and connected directly to the people they serve. The Legal Services Corporation was chartered to be a federal variant, but in recent years it has been abused as a way to line the pockets of wealthy, well-connected lawyers who use its funds to lobby for new government programs, and then sue to expand them. And let’s not even mention the bogus charges for booze and travel. Let’s give the taxpayer a break and put an end to this waste.”
