American Action Network (@AAN) Executive Director Corry Bliss released the following statement upon passage of H. Con. Res. 71, the House Republican FY 2018 budget resolution:
“Today, conservatives took a crucial step in the process of delivering tax reform that will lower rates for working families and job creators. House conservatives passed a budget resolution that not only restores fiscal responsibility in Washington but most notably, it paves the way for pro-growth tax reform. This is exactly the kind of leadership that is needed to ensure middle-class families see a simpler, fairer tax code with lower rates. Congress must keep pushing forward, working families across this country deserve relief.”
In August, American Action Network launched the Middle-Class Growth Initiative (MCGI), a special project to advocate for the passage of meaningful tax reform legislation. The multi-pronged campaign, now totaling $10 million, has included advertising on television, radio, direct mail and mobile billboards across over 40 congressional districts nationwide.

Budget Committee Begins Work to Advance Tax Reform
Washington, D.C. - October 4, 2017 (The Ponder News) -- On the Senate floor, U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) discussed the Senate Budget Committee’s mark-up of the Budget Resolution for Fiscal Year 2018 which will lay the foundation for tax reform. “Beginning today, the Senate Budget Committee will take the next step in our effort to enact pro-growth tax reform, this time by marking up a budget resolution. The Committee's work follows the release last week of our unified framework, the tax blueprint on how to create jobs and how to put more money back in the pockets of the hardworking Americans that earn it.”
“The best way to accomplish meaningful tax reform is to lower rates and simplify provisions across the board to give Americans more take-home pay and have to spend less time hiring somebody just to complete their tax return. We can't simply throw up our hands and do nothing and accept the status quo because American workers and job creators can't afford the status quo. I'm optimistic… about the framework and look forward to working with my colleagues in the Finance Committee in the days and weeks ahead.”

On Thursday, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) introduced a new version of the DREAM Act (an acronym for Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors). The President has pledged, through a spokesperson, to fight this bipartisan legislation that would allow immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children to live and work here legally if they meet certain criteria. This happens as the DACA program (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, the program that provides temporary deportation relief for Dreamers and allows them to work legally) is under attack by Republican leaders and it is clear the President and his team are unlikely to defend it. This could make the 800,000 people who would qualify for the DREAM Act and who currently have DACA vulnerable to deportation, especially because they have registered with federal authorities as part of the program.

Schumer today sounded the alarm and expressed serious concerns over reports that the administration will eliminate all funding to the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Community Development Block Grant Program (CDBG)- the proposed elimination Schumer says would put countless community development and infrastructure projects at risk in Syracuse and across Central New York. Schumer promised to fight to protect the CDBG program, which is currently scheduled to receive $3 billion from HUD.

"President Trump's budget blueprint proposes a significant increase in spending to strengthen national security, rebuild our neglected military, and honor our commitment to veterans with additional resources for the VA. To pay for these changes, it proposes reductions to non-defense programs. After years of overspending, I am encouraged that the President has proposed actual spending cuts and has committed to maintaining the overall cap on discretionary spending. I look forward to carefully examining each of the proposed reductions in this budget proposal."

Tillis, Bipartisan Group of Senators Introduce Legislation Authorizing Additional Visas for Afghan Interpreters, Support Staff

Senators Thom Tillis (R-NC), Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), John McCain (R-AZ), and Jack Reed (D-RI) introduced bipartisan legislation to provide 2,500 more visas for the Afghan Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) program, which allows Afghans, including interpreters, who supported the U.S. mission in Afghanistan and face threats as a result of their service, to apply for refuge in the United States. The senators introduced their bill after the U.S. Embassy in Kabul officially stopped scheduling interviews for applicants seeking a visa through the Afghan SIV program. Last year, Senators Tillis, Shaheen, McCain, and Reed led efforts in the Senate to extend this vital national security program.
