Neal Statement on Senate GOP Health Care Bill
Richard E. Neal (D-MA, 1st)
June 22, 2017

“Republican Senators have taken an already ‘mean’ bill and made it even meaner. Despite seven years of promises, the Senate Republicans’ health care plan would not lower costs, would not provide health and financial security to working families, and would not help solve ongoing public health crises, like the opioid epidemic. This heartless bill would instead shift more of the financial burden of health care onto the backs of middle class families, while at the same time dramatically slash important programs, like Medicare and Medicaid, that seniors and working people depend upon. By crafting this partisan plan in secrecy, far from the view of the American public, and presenting it today without so much as a single public hearing, it’s clear that Senate Republicans learned nothing from the ‘go-it-alone’ strategy that Republicans used in the House. It’s disheartening that Senate Republicans didn’t seize this opportunity to sit down with Democrats, their own colleagues and, most importantly, their constituents to engage in good faith discussions on ways to further improve our health care system in a manner that continues to bring down costs, cover more people and expand important consumer protections.”

Judicial Watch Asks Trump Administration to End Congressional Obamacare Exemption
Judicial Watch
June 23, 2017

The ACA requires states to create at least two exchanges: a small business exchange (referred to as “SHOP” in the ACA) and an individual exchange. It also requires certain members of Congress and congressional employees to purchase insurance on an exchange created either by their state of residence (or by the District, if they are a D.C. resident) or by the federal government, if their state of residence did not establish an exchange. 42 U.S.C. § 18032(d)(3)(D)(i). Because the ACA limits the purchase of insurance on a small business exchange to employees of small businesses – and Congress is not a small business – the ACA unequivocally requires that certain members of Congress and congressional employees purchase insurance on an individual exchange created either by their state of residence (or by the District, if they are a D.C. resident) or by the federal government for that state.

Federal land management agencies have been prohibiting utility companies from inspecting and maintaining electrical lines that run through federal lands. Keeping utility companies from maintaining the trees and foliage along the power lines has contributed to many forest fires, as trees fall across active lines. Of course, the agencies blame the utility companies for the damage. Instead of expanding access to healthcare as promised by the President, it will rip away health insurance from millions of New Yorkers. Instead of making premiums more affordable as promised, it will cause New Yorkers' premiums to increase. It does all this while cutting coverage for essential health benefits like maternity care and mental health, and cutting off federal funding for Planned Parenthood, leaving many New Yorkers with no access to affordable care. Synthetic Drugs, Intelligence, Apprenticeship, Sugar, Student Loans, Hot Cars, General Flynn, and Comey

FOLLOWING SURGE OF SYNTHETIC DRUG OVERDOSES LOCALLY, REP. JOHN KATKO INTRODUCES GROUNDBREAKING, BIPARTISAN LEGISLATION TO COMBAT EPIDEMIC
John Katko (R-NY, 24th)
June 19, 2017

Toxic, synthetic drugs are designed to mimic street drugs like marijuana, LSD, cocaine, Ecstasy and other hard drugs. They can be more potent than the real thing and just as deadly. Currently, manufacturers and distributors of these substances are able to slightly alter the chemical structure of drugs to avoid law enforcement scrutiny and prosecution. Since being elected to represent Central New York in Congress, Rep. Katko has prioritized addressing this crisis.

KENNEDY INTROS BILL TO CREATE RUSSIAN RESPONSE CENTER
Joseph P. Kennedy, 3rd (D-MA, 4th)
June 15, 2017

“Russia’s attack on our election was not guided by party affiliation but instead by a deep desire to weaken trust in our institutions and shake the very foundation of our democracy. Without a strong, coordinated response from our government, adversarial assaults on our electoral system, economy and national security will only become more sophisticated and sustained in the coming years. By uniting our agencies and our allies against this common threat, our Response Center will ensure our government is ready and willing to respond to any future meddling before it takes root.”

STATEMENT: REP. KHANNA SAYS FUNDING NEEDS TO MATCH RHETORIC ON APPRENTICESHIP EXECUTIVE ORDER
Ro Khanna (D-CA, 17th)
June 15, 2017

“Today’s announcement by the White House to create 5 million apprenticeships in the next decade is an aspirational goal. I see this pledge as a way for Congress, the White House, and employers to come together and find new ways to give working families the economic security they deserve. But in order to achieve a 10-fold increase in apprenticeships—from 500,000 to 5 million—the President has to match his rhetoric with funding. His proposed increase to the apprenticeship program is not enough, and the cuts in other parts of the Department of Labor programs undermine his goal.

Family farms in my district and across the country are struggling, and this agreement will help provide relief from unfair trade practices. I applaud Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue for their work. I will work with them to ensure that this deal is enforced and that our sugar policy works in the best interests of American farmers.”

Herrera Beutler and Derek Kilmer introduce ocean acidification bill
Derek Kilmer (D-WA, 6th)
June 16, 2017

Acidification is a result of increasing carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels. When carbon dioxide — a chief “greenhouse gas” — is absorbed by the oceans, chemical reactions occur that change the pH level in the seawater, making it more acidic. As a result, the water eats away at oyster larvae shells and kills them, according to marine biologists and oyster growers.

“In the wake of disturbing new reports on Michael Flynn’s business ties, I’m calling for a complete review of the former National Security Advisor’s international dealings. The last two days have brought a string of disturbing new revelations about Flynn’s suspicious business interests, including his involvement in a plan to build nuclear reactors in Saudi Arabia and sell Russian military equipment to Arab states. Flynn also worked with a foreign cyberweapons company that helped repressive governments launch hacking efforts against human rights advocates and political dissidents.

Jordan questions Justice Department official about Comey's Loretta Lynch comments
Jim Jordan (R-OH, 4th)
June 15, 2017

“The highest officials at the Department of Justice should be straight with the American people, and that did not happen. … And they were misled at the direction of the attorney general! Mr. Comey’s testimony was real clear, he even questioned – he said, ‘Do we really want to do that? Don’t we want to tell the American people the truth?’ And yet he followed, he carried out the order from the attorney general to mislead the American people and say it was a ‘matter,’ not an ‘investigation,’ and of course as I’ve said a couple times, he allowed the perception to continue that our current president of the United States was under investigation when in fact he was not.”

IMF Decides not to Disburse Funds for Another Greek Bailout
Bill Hulzinga (R-MI, 2nd)
June 15, 2017

“While I am pleased the IMF will not be disbursing additional loans to Greece at this time, it is imperative the IMF bases its lending practices on principled and sound decision-making. A failure to do so will continue to leave the IMF open to future exploitation as a junior partner to the Eurozone’s bailout fund. The damage that European shareholders have inflicted on the IMF’s reputation is real, and this will inform the direction the U.S. takes in its governance of the Fund.”

REPS. JENKINS AND CLEAVER INTRODUCE BILL TO EXPAND ACCESS TO RURAL ANESTHESIOLOGY CARE
Lynn Jenkins (R-KS, 2nd)
June 13, 2017

“For many years, rural hospitals and clinics have suffered from a shortage of anesthesiologists to care for their patients. Attracting physicians to live and work in a rural setting is a unique challenge these critical access hospitals face,” said Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins. “The Medicare Access to Rural Anesthesiology Act remedies this problem by allowing certain rural hospitals to use Medicare Part A funds on a ‘pass-through’ basis. Reps. Huffman, McKinley, Walz, Reichert, Schrader, & Katko Introduce Bipartisan IDEA Full Funding Act
Jared Huffman (D-CA, 2nd)
June 15, 2017

In 1975, Congress passed the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), with the goal of guaranteeing that every child with disabilities would have the opportunity to reach his or her full potential. At that time, the federal government committed to pay 40 percent of the average per pupil expenditure for special education. Unfortunately, that pledge has never been met: current federal funding makes up just 15.7 percent. The bipartisan IDEA Full Funding Act would require regular increases in IDEA spending to finally meet the federal commitment to America’s children and schools, relieve the burden on states and local school districts, and ensure educational opportunities for all students with disabilities.

Thanks to innovation, investment, and smart policies, our nation’s carbon emissions have already declined by 11 percent since 2005. The United States is ALREADY a clean energy and fossil fuel energy leader; we can reduce our emissions and continue to produce American energy without the Paris Accord. America has already reduced its carbon-dioxide emissions dramatically, beginning before the Accord.”

June 02, 2017

Congressman Raúl M. Grijalva (D-AZ) released the following statement after a Texas bill that would have permitted state officials to license family detention centers as “child care facilities” failed to pass the Texas Legislature. The law would have subjected private detention centers to weaker regulations and allowed them to increase their profit margins by holding women and children, whom they receive higher per diem rates for, in detention for longer periods of time. The bill’s defeat comes after hundreds of thousands of dollars were spent in lobbying efforts by the private prison industry.

May 25, 2017

Rep. Luis V. The bill would create a program that would allow agricultural workers and their families to apply for a “Blue Card” that gives them legal status and work authorization if they show consistent employment in U.S. agriculture over the past two years, pay a fine, and pass a thorough background check. A 3- to 5- year path to citizenship is provided to those who continue to work in agriculture for the requisite amount of time. The bill is the House companion to Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s bill, S. 1034, introduced earlier this month, which currently has seven Senate co-sponsors.

U.S. Rep. Herrera Beutler Opposes President’s Proposal to Sell BPA’s Assets
Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-WA, 3rd)
May 24, 2017

“The President’s proposal to sell off the Bonneville Power Administration’s assets in his budget released today is a non-starter for residents and employers throughout the entire Northwest. For decades, ratepayers have made financial investments in and had say over hydropower infrastructure that provides our region with the cleanest, most affordable and most reliable energy in the nation. That opportunity has been afforded by the unique and sustainable model made possible by the BPA. If this were sold off to a private bidder, residents would most certainly face higher monthly energy bills and the needs of rural communities would likely be overlooked. Rather than selling off this self-financed asset for a one-time ‘credit card’ payment to the U.S. Treasury, I would encourage this Administration to emulate the BPA’s model in other regions of the country.

John Garamendi (D-CA, 3rd)

“The 4th Circuit Court of Appeals made the right decision in upholding a lower court ruling that blocked the implementation of President Trump’s travel ban from six predominately Muslim countries. America is a stronger nation when it welcomes immigrants and embraces religious freedom. President Trump repeatedly called for a Muslim ban during the campaign, and people close to the President have admitted that this travel ban was a backdoor attempt to create a legal framework to implement the Muslim ban by other means. The ban is discriminatory and must be rejected. Let’s remember that all of these immigrants are vetted before entering the United States. Muslim Americans form an integral part of the American fabric, and we cannot sacrifice our values for a misguided policy that will not make us safer."

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom and security of this great nation.
